Buying on eBay: A Checklist for New Items
By BlackFriday.us Editorial Team
An eBay offer is a specific listing from a specific seller. The useful comparison is the exact product, what arrives in the box, when it can arrive and what the purchase costs. Start with those details before considering a discount or a familiar brand name.
This guide combines our shopping checklist with eBay's published help, reviewed October 3, 2026. We have not bought or physically inspected the featured listings. BlackFriday.us may earn a commission from qualifying purchases through affiliate links; checkout and order support are handled through eBay and the seller.
What our eBay selection includes
Our current selection requires listings in New condition, located in the United States, priced in U.S. dollars, available to buy at a fixed price, and offering a $0 shipping option. Sellers must have at least 99% positive feedback and a feedback score of at least 250. Used, refurbished, open-box, auction and parts-only listings are excluded.
These are selection requirements, not a guarantee of product quality, delivery or warranty. We check availability and the displayed price before showing homepage picks and again when you select Shop Deal. A listing can sell out or change between checks. We show a selected catalog; searching BlackFriday.us searches our current site inventory.
Read the condition and the complete listing
A title containing the word new is not enough. Check the condition field, description, photos and included accessories together. eBay's condition definitions vary by category; open-box and refurbished have separate meanings from New. Ask the seller through eBay if the description contradicts the condition or leaves a necessary detail unclear.
Write down the complete model number, generation, capacity, size, color and package contents. For electronics, confirm the power supply, region compatibility and included cables. For clothing, use the listed measurements. For automotive items, check fitment for your vehicle. A similar title or stock photo does not establish an exact match.
Look beyond the feedback percentage
Open the seller's feedback profile from the listing and read recent comments, including any recurring concerns about condition, dispatch or communication. Consider the number and relevance of the transactions as well as the percentage. Our threshold is an initial screen; it does not replace your review of the current seller and listing.
A hypothetical seller with a perfect percentage from a handful of transactions gives you different evidence from a seller with a long history. Neither statistic tells you whether this particular item has the right accessories or an applicable manufacturer warranty. Verify those details separately.
Compare the total and the delivery estimate
Use the same model, condition and bundle for your comparison. Add shipping, tax and any required accessories. As an illustration, a $79 listing plus $12 shipping costs $91 before tax; an otherwise equivalent $89 listing with $0 shipping costs $2 less. These numbers are hypothetical, not current offers.
Our $0 shipping filter identifies an offered option. Confirm that option for your delivery address, plus the estimated arrival dates and any location restrictions, on eBay. A U.S. item location alone does not promise delivery to every U.S. address or arrival by a particular event.
For a gift or time-sensitive purchase, leave time to inspect the delivery and resolve a problem. A crossed-out price does not establish the lowest available price or a historical low. Compare current equivalent offers rather than assuming the biggest percentage wins.
Separate returns, buyer protection and warranty
Before paying, read whether the seller accepts a change-of-mind return, the request window and who pays return shipping. eBay's return guidance distinguishes seller return policies from problems such as an item arriving damaged or not matching its description.
The return-shipping guidance explains that the reason for the return and the seller's policy determine who pays. $0 outbound shipping does not automatically mean a free change-of-mind return.
eBay Money Back Guarantee covers many eligible purchases when an item does not arrive or is damaged, faulty or different from the listing. Coverage has exclusions, payment requirements and deadlines; review the current policy and complete payment through eBay. It is separate from a manufacturer warranty. Do not assume a New listing comes from an authorized dealer or has warranty coverage for your region.
Your final checkout checklist
- Match the exact model or variant, condition and everything included.
- Review the seller's current feedback and resolve conflicting listing details.
- Confirm the complete price and delivery estimate for your address.
- Read the return window, return-shipping responsibility and applicable warranty.
- Pay through eBay and retain the listing and order details. Use the order's help or return process promptly if a problem occurs.
